Adaptix Supports Willcom in Test of OFDMA-Based Mobile Services

Adaptix has provided equipment and technical support services to Japan-based service provider Willcom for use in a trial testing the effectiveness of OFDMA as the basis for next-generation Personal Handyphone System (PHS) services. Adaptix is a developer of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology.

Willcom is reportedly using Adaptix OFDMA-powered base stations and mobile terminals in advanced testing of multimedia applications - including simultaneous usage of VoIP, streaming IP video and high speed internet access - in a variety of mobile conditions. Willcom kicked off its trial with Adaptix in November 2005 with a series of both fixed and mobile application testing.

Using PHS technology based on time division multiple access (TDMA) technology, Willcom provides mobile service nationwide in Japan. The company hopes that a next-generation OFDMA-based PHS service could have the potential of providing a 'cost-effective and high-performance upgrade path for the nearly 100m PHS subscribers worldwide'.
